3M, Pepper Spray, and a Wrought Iron Fence: Three Safety Questions, Three Different Answers

But after dozens of rush orders and last-minute audits, I've learned that most safety questions aren't really about products. Or rather, they're about scenarios. Take three examples that sound unrelated but show up in the same search log: 3M Combat Arms Earplugs, pepper spray expiration, and a wrought iron fence. They don't compete with each other. They're different branches of the same tree.

Why there's no one-size-fits-all answer

Before I recommend anything, I sort the situation into one of three buckets:

  • Protecting your hearing - usually in a workplace or on a range.
  • Protecting your body - pepper spray for self-defense.
  • Protecting your property - a physical barrier like a wrought iron fence.

Each bucket has different failure modes, different costs, and different legal considerations. Let me walk through them.

Scenario 1: When you need hearing protection

If someone asks me about 3M Combat Arms Earplugs specifically, I first ask what kind of noise they're dealing with. The Combat Arms design uses a small filter that reduces dangerous impulse noise - gunshots, blank fire, hydraulic impacts - while still letting you hear normal conversation. Does pepper spray expire?

Yes. Most pepper sprays have a shelf life of 2 to 4 years from the manufacture date. The expiration date should be printed on the canister or the label. If it isn't, I'd be cautious about buying it.

The propellant leaks down over time, and the nozzle can clog. An expired can may still spray, but the stream is often weak, shorter, or uneven. That's the last thing you want in a self-defense situation.

Honestly, I only started treating expiration dates seriously after a canister failed during a training drill. It was three years past its date, and it barely sprayed two feet. No one had checked it because it 'looked fine.'

I don't have hard data on how many people carry expired pepper spray, but in the last year I've seen three expired canisters during facility security drills - all still in active bags.

Set a calendar reminder for replacement. A $10 canister replaced on time is cheaper than one that fails when you need it.

Is pepper spray legal in California?

Yes, but not without rules. As of April 2025, California generally allows adults 18 and older to carry pepper spray for self-defense under Penal Code 22810. You can't have a felony conviction that prohibits possession, and the product must meet state and federal requirements. Because pepper spray is also regulated as a pesticide under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), it needs an EPA registration number.

This is also where I'd add a 'verify current' note: local ordinances can be stricter, and online retailers sometimes refuse to ship to California because of the sales restrictions. If you're buying for an organization, don't just buy the cheapest canister - make sure the product is registered, dated, and compliant. That's the legal side of total cost.

Scenario 3: When you're dealing with a wrought iron fence

Now for the question that seems out of place in a safety supply article: a wrought iron fence. I hear this from facility managers and homeowners alike. The safety issue isn't the fence itself - it's the lifecycle.

If you're choosing a fence, the cheapest quote isn't the cheapest project. A low-cost wrought iron fence with thin coating will rust, especially near a coastal plant or in an area with road salt. A properly galvanized, powder-coated fence costs more upfront but usually needs less maintenance. You're paying for the lifetime, not the first month.

Installation matters too. A fence set too shallow can lean. A gate with undersized hinges will sag. If you're putting up a fence as a security measure, a gate that fails is a security gap. And if you or your crew will be painting or repairing the fence, add fall protection and eye protection to the job plan - the same risk assessment you'd do for any maintenance task.

This is the total cost angle: the total cost of a wrought iron fence includes purchase, install, coating, repairs, and safety. It's not 'buy once and forget.'

How to tell which scenario you're in

If you're staring at a list of safety products and feeling overwhelmed, here's a simpler way to sort it:

  1. What are you protecting? If it's hearing, you're in Scenario 1. If it's personal defense, Scenario 2. If it's property or a barrier, Scenario 3.
  2. What happens if it fails? Hearing loss, a failed self-defense moment, or a security/fall hazard. Each has a very different consequence.
  3. What's the total cost over time? Include training, replacement, legal compliance, and maintenance. The lowest price is rarely the lowest cost.

I've specified 3M hearing protection for plenty of clients, and I've also told clients to skip the advanced stuff when a solid disposable earplug was the right total-cost answer. The same logic works for pepper spray and fences: match the solution to the scenario, check the dates and laws, and build in replacement cycles.

Safety isn't a single purchase. It's a series of decisions made before something goes wrong.
