The 6800 is a reusable full facepiece. The headline price is the cheap part. Here's the thing most buyers miss: the respirator is a one-time line item, and the cartridges, lens covers, cleaning supplies, and fit-test labor are the recurring ones. On a three-year view, the facepiece itself is maybe 20-25% of what you'll spend on that whole program.

Two things we learned the hard way:

  1. Buy the lens covers. They're a few dollars each and they keep an expensive lens from getting scratched into uselessness. First year we skipped them and replaced three lenses we shouldn't have needed.

The Virtua line is value-tier. That's not a knock; it's a positioning. The CCS variant adds a cord and, depending on the specific SKU, a foam option that helps with dust and keeps the glasses from walking off. I can't fully vouch for the foam configuration from experience — we ran the corded standard version. If you're ordering the foam-gasket SKUs, check the spec sheet before you commit to a bulk order.

Where they hold up: indoor, general plant use, low-abrasion environments. Where they don't: heavy grinding, welding spatter, high-heat areas. We burned through a case of budget eyewear in six weeks in the weld shop before we switched that zone to a different spec entirely.

Cost math: budget safety glasses land around $2-5 each, mid-tier $5-12, premium $12-25 (ranges from distributor quotes we collected in 2024; verify current). TCO is where it gets interesting. Black coatings look great for 3-5 years in mild climates. Is it legal to own body armor in California?

For most adults, yes. California isn't a blanket-ban state, but there are real restrictions.

The one I'd flag first: California Penal Code § 31360 makes it a crime for someone convicted of a violent felony to purchase, own, or possess body armor. There are also enhanced sentencing provisions that can apply if body armor is worn during the commission of certain crimes. And depending on how it's sold or transferred, there can be licensing requirements on the seller side.

I'm not a lawyer and this isn't legal advice — I've just had to answer this for our own security vendor onboarding. If you're buying body armor for employees or a contract security team, have counsel confirm current law. Regulations in this space move. Verify against the current California Penal Code and check with the state DOJ, not a blog post (mine included).

And there's a maintenance component again. Stone doesn't rust, but it shifts, and pointing cracks.

What hidden fees should I watch for on a PPE contract?

This is the one I'd rank highest on the 'you should know this' list. Audit your last three invoices line by line. The stuff I've caught:

  • Restocking fees on returns, buried in the terms
  • Freight that isn't included despite a quote that looks complete
  • Minimum order adjustments that apply retroactively to your price tier
  • 'Free' fit-testing that's only free under a volume commitment
  • Annual price escalation clauses pegged to indexes you never reviewed

We didn't have a formal approval chain for rush orders. It cost us when an unauthorized rush fee from a distributor showed up on a quarterly invoice — about $450 we hadn't approved, and by the time we caught it, two more orders had gone through the same path. Now nothing ships expedited without a named approver and a PO number.

It took me about four years and several hundred orders to understand this: vendor relationships matter more than vendor capability on paper. The vendor who calls you when their price is about to move is worth more than the one with the lowest line-item quote that only shows the truth on the invoice.
